# Understanding Fingerprints

## 🔍 What is a Fingerprint?

In the context of web browsing and digital privacy, a fingerprint (also known as a browser fingerprint or device fingerprint) is a unique set of data points collected from your browser and device. It can be used to identify or track you in the online environment, even without the use of cookies or IP addresses.

Websites and scripts can access various attributes from your browser through JavaScript or other techniques. These attributes include, but are not limited to:

* Browser type and version
* Operating system and platform
* Installed fonts
* Screen resolution and color depth
* Timezone
* Language and regional settings
* WebGL and Canvas rendering
* AudioContext data
* Plugins and MIME types
* Touch support capabilities
* Device memory, CPU type, and hardware concurrency (processing threads)

When combined, these attributes often create a statistically near-unique profile — called a "digital fingerprint" — allowing one user to be distinguished from another, even if they use incognito mode or change their IP address.
